A tragic incident occurred on Friday night in Hooghly district, West Bengal, where a four-year-old girl was reportedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted. The child, who is part of the Banjara community, was sleeping next to her grandmother under a mosquito net near a railway shed in Tarakeshwar.
The grandmother recounted that the assailant cut through the mosquito net and abducted the child around 4 AM. She expressed her shock, stating, "She was sleeping with me. I didn’t even realize when she was taken. I don't know who took her away. They cut the mosquito net and took her away. She was found naked." The family had been residing near the railway station after their home was demolished.
Later, the girl was discovered bleeding and unclothed, lying in a pool of blood near a drain, as reported by a local media outlet. She was initially taken to a nearby hospital and subsequently referred to Chandannagar Hospital for further treatment.
A case has been filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, according to a senior officer from the Hooghly rural police.
Political Reactions
The incident has sparked outrage, with the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government of failing to uphold law and order and allegedly attempting to suppress the case initially.
Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, criticized the police for their inaction, claiming they were more focused on concealing the crime than addressing it. He stated on social media, "This is the True Face of Mamata Banerjee’s free-for-all regime. A child’s life is shattered, yet the Police are shielding the State’s Fake Law & Order Image, by suppressing the truth." He further questioned how many more innocent lives must be lost for political gain.
